Transportation & Reach
Set in an extensive valley in the southern tablelands of New South Wales,
Canberra is a well-planned lakeside city of parklands, impressive
restaurants, beautiful bushland and leafy suburbs. Being the capital of
Australia, the city is well connected to the cities of Australia and the
outside world and getting to Canberra is most convincing. Canberra is easily
reached by the main highway between Australia' two largest cities, the Hume
Highway. The trip takes about 3 hrs from Sydney and about 6 1/2 from
Melbourne. The flights between Canberra to/from Sydney and Melbourne are
frequent and relatively cheap. Canberra is accessible by train from Sydney
but not Melbourne. The journey is slower than the bus, but a little cheaper
and a lot more comfortable.
Canberra Airport:
Canberra International Airport provides direct domestic services to Sydney,
Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, with connections to other domestic
centres. There are direct daily flights to Albury and Newcastle in New South
Wales. The Canberra International Airport is eight minutes from the city
center, Parliament House and all major tourist attractions. Queanbeyan too
is an eight minute ride away although from a different direction.
Railways:
An interstate CountryLink railway service connects Canberra to Sydney.
Canberra's railway station is in the inner south suburb of Kingston. The
CountryLink is a government owned passenger train and bus network that
connects 350 stations in New South Wales, Queensland, the Australian Capital
Territory and Victoria. A business enterprise of the Rail Corporation New
South Wales CountryLink is owned by the Government of New South Wales.
CountryLink's most important train is the XPT which is based on the British
High Speed Train.
Local Transportation of Canberra:
The bus system in Canberra is one of the best in Australia. With minimal
traffic on the road buses are almost always on time. During the week buses
are very frequent to most locations and even on weekends enough buses run to
make getting to anywhere in Canberra easy. The bus services are based around
four town center bus interchanges - City, Woden, Tuggeranong and Belconnen.
The 300 series runs every 10 or so minutes from Belconnen to Tuggeranong.
The bus is also a cheap option of travel. At only $3 (adult) for any single
trip (with a 90 minutes transfer option at no extra charge) traveling from
one end of the ACT to the other is very economical. For very short trips it
can be more economical to just walk. Canberras public bus service,
ACTION Buses, covers the major sights and most suburbs.
