The city of Darwin has a good public transportation system that enables the
locals as well as the tourist to move around and within the city easily. You
can avail any public transport for the purpose of getting around Darwin.
Darwin Airport:
Darwin International Airport offers flights to Singapore (Tiger Airways and
Jetstar Airways), Bali (Garuda Indonesia), Brunei (Royal Brunei) and East
Timor (Air North). Qantas operates domestic flights between Alice Springs,
Gove, Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Virgin Blue
flies to Brisbane, Skywest Airlines and Airnorth fly to Broome. Tiger
Australia began flights to and from Melbourne in November 2007.
Railways:
Darwin is well connected to other major Australian cities by Train. To
reach Darwin by Train, visitors can take the - Ghan - from Sydney, Melbourne
or Adelaide to Alice Springs and on to Darwin, enjoying the most scenic
outback trails of Australia.
Local Transportation of Darwin:
Bus: One can avail the Darwin bus services operated by several
private bus companies, shuttling between Darwin's major places of interest.
- There are 14 routes that the Darwinbus operates on and it also takes
tourists to the suburban area. Routes 4 and 10 are the most useful routes as
they run between the city centre and Casuarina Shopping Centre via the
Mindil Beach and Parap markets. - A bus route runs down Mitchell and
Cavenagh Streets in the city centre with the city bus interchange on Harry
Chan Avenue. During weekdays, most buses ply at half-hourly intervals.
Taxis: City Radio Taxis and Darwin Radio Taxis are the most
important taxi service providers of the city. Apart from this there are a
large number of car hiring companies, which offers cars and limousines on
hire, which you can hire for the purpose of getting around Darwin. Although
expensive, the taxis are the easiest way to travel in the city.
Minibus: A unique mode of transportation available in Darwin is
Minibus. The minibus in Darwin charges a flat fare, and takes passengers to
anywhere they want to go in the city. Minibuses terminal is located near the
corner of Knuckey Street and the Smith Street Mall. Generally the minibus
does not leave the stand until it has several passengers on board.
