The name of the place was given by John Lort Stokes, Commander of The

scientist and naturalist who went with him to South America. George Goyder,
the Surveyor-General of South Australia, named the settlement Palmerston,
after the British Prime Minister Lord Palmerston. Gold rush, aboriginal
skirmishes, Japanese WW II bombings and cyclone destructions have marked the
history of this magnificent city of darwin.
The Northern Territory was initially settled and administered by South
Australia, until its transfer to the Commonwealth in 1911. On 5 February
1869, George Goyder, the Surveyor-General of South Australia, established a
small settlement of 135 people at Port Darwin. Goyder named the settlement
Palmerston, after the British Prime Minister Lord Palmerston. In 1870, the
first poles for the Overland Telegraph were erected in Darwin, connecting
Australia to the rest of the world. The discovery of gold at Pine Creek in
the 1880s further boosted the young colony's development. Upon Commonwealth
administration in 1911, Darwin became the city's official name. Today the
city is the capital city of the northern territory of Australia. The city,
despite of being regularly hit by cyclones and bombed during wars stands as
one of the most beautiful cities of the world. The city is not only bestowed
with beautiful sites and landscapes but is also rich in its culture and
