Overview
Hobart is Australia's is an important city in southern Australia and the
capital of the island state of Tasmania. The city of Hobart is located at at
the foot of Mt Wellington and on the estuary of the Derwent River on the
south-east coast of the island of Tasmania. The city came into being in 1803
and early in its history it was a major whaling port and shipbuilding
centre. Today the city functions as the main administrative and commercial
centre of Tasmania. It has a population of about 130,000, which is about 40
per cent of Tasmanians.
The small size of the city, the riverside location, the busy harbour and
the beautiful historic buildings all add to its charm. Hobart is the
Australias second oldest capital city, the gateway to Antarctica and
homeport for Australias only icebreaker, Aurora Australis. Hobart was
also the first city in Australia to have a casino, this was established in
1973. Hobart is bestowed with many historical elements like Arthur's Circus,
a circle of cottages built around a village green, St George's Anglican
Church, and Anglesea Barracks, built in 1811 is the oldest military
establishment in Australia.
