Overview
Located in the country's southeast on the banks of River Yarra,
Melbourne is the state capital of Victoria. Home to over 70% of all
Victorians, Melbourne is the second most populous city in Australia. Not
only the business, administrative, cultural and recreational hub of the
state, it also supports the position as Australia's pre-eminent center
for arts, culture, education, fine food and shopping.
The Marvellous Melbourne is a city of Victorian-era
buildings, pretty parks and gardens and wide leafy boulevards of which
the inhabitants are justifiably proud. In the fierce rivalry between
Melbourne and Sydney, the local residents bask in satisfaction that
Melbourne beats Sydney on cultural front as well as in sport. It is
indeed a vibrant city but yet not brash as Sydney.
Known as the sporting capital of Australia (or maybe the world), the
city plays host to world-renowned sporting events like the Melbourne
Cup, Australian Open Tennis, Qantas Australia Grand Prix and the premier
horse racing Carnival and is also home to the famous Aussie Rules
(AFL) Football. The city also frequently beats out other state
capitals in bids for major international concerts, plays, exhibitions,
fairs and sporting events.
Although Melbourne has pleasant weather all the year round, but due to
its unexpected weather fluctuations, the city has been names as The
City of Four seasons in one day'. Therefore, it would be wise to be
prepared for the bright sun on one balmy summer day or a sudden chill in
the air the next day.
The third-largest Greek City in the world and the largest Italian City
outside of Italy, Melbourne is home to people from over 140 nations and
this throbbing mix of Chinese, Vietnamese, Jewish, Italian and Arabic
communities add their own unique touch to this thriving city.
