The Ross river flows through the heart of the city. The Ross River Dam lies around 30 kilometers south allowing the river to serve as the major source of water in the city. There is another smaller dam in the Paluma range to the north of the city.

The location Townsville, Australia's largest tropical city, is bounded by Mission Beach to the north, Charters Towers to the west, and Bowen in the south. The five resort islands of Dunk, Magnetic, Orpheus, Hinchinbrook and Bedarra, all different in character, are located around Townsville and all offer a unique experience for the visitors. Being a tropical region Townsville experiences very distinct wet and dry seasons. The urban location of Townsville is characterized by rocky springs and a planned satellite city.
