History & Evolution
During the 1860s, a sea captain, Robert Towns asked John Melton Black to
build a dock on the Cleveland Bay in the north Queensland coast. The
settlement was named Townsville after him. Soon Townsville was declared a
municipality, with John Melton Black as the first Mayor. During World war
Two its bustling population of 30,000 boomed to more than 100,000, when it
became a major base for Australian and US forces. The history is marked with
Tropical storms have threatened the city of Townsville on many occasions of
which a category 4 storm on Christmas Eve 1971 causing considerable damage.
Apart from this world wars I and II also gave a major setback to the city.
However today Townsville stands as a major tourist attraction of Australia
and boasts of its scenic beauty and diverse culture. The rich history of the
city also has an important contribution in this regard.
Site-Seeing
Castle Hill:
Castle Hill has become a major sightseeing place in Townsville. The castle
is a notable place of history and refers to be one of the heritage places
for the people of the sunshine city. Castle Hill, Townsville is the pink
colored stone or rock standing far above the sea-level. The real charm of
the magnetic island is felt when it is viewed from this place. The Cleveland
Bay is also one of the prime points that can be viewed from castle Hill.

The Strand:
The Strand is renowned for its lengthy beaches and ocean baths. The place
always experieneces a breeze from south-east. The Strand is home to various
picnic spots. Several festivals and events takes place in the strand.
Christmas events, candlelight carols, the stable, firework displays are the
common events on The Strand. The best part of festivity is the New Year Eve.
Thousands of people gather and enjoy every moment of this. The Strand has
organized a few events, Centenary of Federation event is one worth
mentioning. There are many wind energy projects that are coming up in this
part of Townsville.
Magnetic Island:
The Magnetic island is located on the Cleveland Bay. The island is the
place for optimum energy and relaxation. The island is popularly known as
the 'playground of visitors'. It is only 30 minutes from the heart of the
city. When Captain Cook was sailing by the east coast of Australia his
compass had a great magnetic effect towards this island. Thus, the name
Magnetic Island, Townsville came into existence. The Magnetic Island is rich
in wildlife and numerous eucalyptus trees. There are a number of bird
sanctuaries in the island. The hotels and resort are in plenty at this
beautiful place. Moreover the island is well connected and one can reach the
place without any husstle. Koalas and the numerous birds are the best
features of the Magnetic Island, Townsville. The island has about 23 beaches
and is a treat to watch.
