Sofia has a well developed infrastructure and Public transit in the city is well establishes as well. Rail, air and road transport serves the city while its eight railway stations and Sofia Airport, provide access to other parts of the world.
It provides underground trains, buses, trams and trolley buses and a subway system besides 15,000 licensed taxicabs that runs through.
Sofia Airports: - Sofia International Airport EAD (SOF): Located 10km (6m) east of Sofia, the airport is bright, modern and smoke-free having capacity to serve 2.5 million passengers. In addition to Bulgaria's national airline, BALKAN, the airport also serves other airlines including Aeroflot, Air France, Air Ukraine, Alitalia, AUA Austrian Airlines, British Airways, CSA, Hemus Air, KLM, Lufthansa, Malev and Olympic Airways.
Sofia Railway Transportation:
- Balgarski Darzhavni Zheleznitsi is the Bulgarian State Railway, which runs cheap and extensive services throughout the country. However trains can be very slow.
- Tsentralna Gara is the main station of Sofia, located at 112 Maria Louiza Boulevard, a 20-minute walk north of the city center.
- There are six main routes from Sofia:
To Varna or Burgas on the Black Sea coast
To Plovdiv & beyond on Turkish border
To Kalotina on Yugoslavian border
To Kulata on Greek border
To Ruse on Romanian border. - There are also daily services to Belgrade, Bucharest, Budapest, Istanbul, Kiev, Moscow, St Petersburg & Thessaloniki.
Local Transportation of Sofia: The city transport authority is the Ministry of Transport and Communications operating Metro (or Sofia Underground), Trams, Buses, Trolley Buses & Taxis. The company under which public transportation runs is Sofia Public Transportation Company (SPTC).
Sofia has quite an organized Taxi transpiration system. Official charges are extremely cheap while the more reputable firms are Okay Supertrans, Yes Taxi, Inex & Taxi-S-Express.
Sofia also has a fleet of privately run blue minibuses, known as Marsh-route Taxis covering wider routes in a prescribed pattern.
Hotels & Accommodation The accommodation facilities in Sofia are wide including private rooms and family-run hotels. There are also a number of old and elegant hotels, worth the extra you pay, while is you are on a restricted budget, head for one of the small inns or pensions generally run by families that literally dot the city.
