Transportation & Reach

The
favorable location of Montreal has not only made it the largest inland
port but also one of the most important transportation hub for Eastern
Canada. While being the railway headquarter of the country, the city is
also equipped with well-developed air, road and maritime links to the
rest of Canada as well as the United States and Europe. The extensive
and super-efficient public transport system comprising of Metro, Bus and
Commuter Rail Services is run by STCUM.
Montreal Airports:
- Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL): Located 15m
(24km) west of the city, the airport is the major international
airport of Montreal. It has direct flights to and from all major
Canadian and most U.S. cities. There are also flights to many cities
in Europe, Caribbean & Mexico.
- Mirabel Airport (YMX): Located 50km northwest from downtown
Montreal, the airport handles charter and cargo flights.
Montreal Railway Transportation:
VIA Rail is Canada's national rail service provider connecting Montreal
to places within Canada and by Amtrak services to destinations in the
US.
The Central Station (Gare Centrale) of the city is located at rue de la
Gauchetiere West. The other major station is Windsor station used by
local commuter trains.
Local Transportation of Montreal:
Public Transport services for the whole of the island of Montreal are
run by the Societe de Transport de Montreal (STM), while commuter rail
and off-island bus services are coordinated by the Agence Metropolitaine
de Transport. The network is served by:
- Metro System: The efficient and pristine metro has four
lines and 65 stations, 10 of which are linked to the Underground
City. It stops are all integrated with a comprehensive network of
city bus routes.
- Bus Network: The bus network of Montreal is
extraordinarily vast and efficient with regional, national and
international (Greyhound USA) bus services connecting the city to
destinations elsewhere.
The network is also well connected to the metro as well as commuter
rail.
- Commuter Rail Services: There are total five commuter
rail lines connecting Montreal with the outer suburbs. These all
lines are intern well connected both to the metro and bus network.
