Flying
in and out of Vancouver is a pleasure because of the great Vancouver
International Airport (YVR) which has been named the best medium sized
airport in North America, the second best airport on the continent and
the tenth best in the world. Further, Vancouver has a number of
transportation options including ferries and boats since the city is
surrounded on three sides by water.
Vancouver Airports:
- Vancouver International Airport (YVR). Located on Sea Island, the
airport is 23 km south of the city center.
- Abbotsford International Airport. Vancouver's alternative airport
which is located in the Eastern Lower Mainland about an hour out of
the city. It mostly receives domestic flights.
Vancouver Railway Transportation:
- VIA Rail Canada. It is the national rail service provider
connecting Vancouver to Toronto via Kamloops, Jasper and Edmonton.
Pacific Central Station is the terminus for the main
transcontinental lines.
- Amtrak. It links the city with Bellingham and Seattle.
- BC Rails. It has a service to North Vancouver from towns such as
Whistler, Squamish and other places in the north
- The private Rocky Mountaineer. It connects Vancouver to Banff and
Calgary.
Vancouver Water Transportation:
The Port of Vancouver looked after by the Vancouver Port Authority has
25 marine terminals. Although most of the traffic from these terminals
is cargo, a dozen of cruise lines also operate over 300 trips to Alaska.
BC Ferries connects Vancouver Island to the mainland.
Local Transportation of Vancouver:
The local transportation of Vancouver largely run under the efficient
and integrated Translink Public Transport System which includes:
- Bus. There are several bus services connecting Vancouver like
Greyhound Buses have a service form Seattle and Calgary, Pacific
Coach Lines links with Victoria, Quick Coach Lines to the USA and
Bigfoot Adventure Tours to Banff and Calgary. The main bus station
is Pacific Central Station.
- Sky Train. This computerized light rail service has four
underground downtown stops as well as an elevated track. The Sky
Train network reaches every part of the city including beaches and
ski slopes.
Hotels & Accommodations
Elegant luxury hotels rub shoulders with the more moderately priced
accommodations in this favorite city of tourists. Wide range of hostels,
university rooms, budget hotels and motels are available with prices and
features to match any pocket and that too at convenient locations.
The past few years have seen a lot of activity in the Vancouver hotel
business due to the building boom associated with Expo'86. Therefore,
there are much more convenient choices to lodge in Vancouver.
