While North America remains dominant in terms of gross domestic expenditure on R&D (GERD) with 37 per cent share, Asia is fast catching up as the second largest investor in R&D with 32 per cent share, overtaking Europe.

Asia's healthy economic growth has heightened demand for energy in the region. According to EIA estimates, oil consumption in developing Asian countries is expected to rise by 2.7 per cent annually from about 14.8 million barrels per day (MMbbl/d) in 2004 to nearly 29.8 MMbbl/d by 2030. China is expected to account for almost half the growth. Despite the austere global sentiment, the underlying economic drivers in Asia, in particular the emerging markets, reveal bullish demand for oil and energy as countries with big population are steadily shifting into higher income brackets.
