Transportation & Reach

Cairo
is the center of almost the entire Egyptian transportation network may it be
extensive road network, rail system, subway system or maritime services.
An extensive road network along with flyovers and bridges connects the city
with other Egyptian cities and villages. While the cheap and comprehensive
public transportation system makes moving in the city quiet convenient.
Cairo is well connected to the other parts of the world too.
Cairo Airports:
- Cairo International Airport (CAI): Situated 22km (14m)
northeast of Cairo, the airport is the major national and international
airport of the city.
Cairo Railway Transportation:
The rail network of the city connects it well with other states and cities
of country like Luxor and Aswan. There is a convenient range of ticket
options from third class to luxurious.
Ramses Railway Station (Mahattat Ramses) is the main railway station of the
city facing Ramses Square (Midan Ramses). This station was previously called
as Misr Station.
Cairo Water Transportation:
Cairo also provides sea route through its Ports like Sudan and others.
The not very regular ferry services ply from Suakin to Massawa and Jeddah
in Saudi Arabia and also to the Suez in Egypt. There is also a service
between Wadi Halfa and Aswan in Egypt on the Lake Nasser between the two
countries.
However, the normal schedules cease to apply during the Haj (pilgrimage)
season.
- Local transportation of Cairo:

Metro: With an added advantage of being very cheap and
comparatively less crowded, Metro is also the most efficient, reliable
and fast public transport in Cairo. The route connects Helwan in the
south to Heliopolis in north with various branches to Shubra, Ataba and
Abdin. There is also a subway line between Giza and Shubra.
- Taxis: The streets of Cairo are well supplied with taxis
though it is always advisable to negotiate the fairs the taxis may have
a fare meter but they are not likely to be used.
- Buses: The bus and minibus services operating in Cairo are
considered risky for tourists because of overcrowding and the potentials
for pick pocketing and also one need to have atleast a working knowledge
of Arabic to navigate.
- River Bus/Boats/Ferries: Traveling on the Nile by a felucca
(a sailing boat) is an unforgettable experience. You can also take a
three-day leisurely ride from Aswan to Esn, Edfu or Kom Ombo.
