History & Evolution
The city of Hamburg takes its name from the first permanent building on the site, the Hammaburg castle built by Emperor Charlemagne in 808 AD. The castle was built on rocky ground in a marsh between the Alster and the Elbe as a defense against Slavic incursion. The city was under the control of Napoleon I from 1810 to 1814. During this period Hamburg suffered severely. Russian forces under General Bennigsen finally freed the city in 1814.

In 1842, about a quarter of the inner city was destroyed in the "Great Fire". This fire started on the night of the 4 May 1842 and was extinguished on 8 May. It destroyed three churches, the town hall, and countless other buildings. It killed 51 people, and left an estimated 20,000 homeless. Reconstruction took more than 40 years. Hamburg experienced its fastest growth during the second half of the 19th century, when its population more than quadrupled to 800,000 as the growth of the city's Atlantic trade helped make it Europe's third-largest port. The city suffered huge losses due to the air raids of world war-II. Today Hamburg is Germany's largest deep-sea port for container shipping and its major commercial and trading centre.

Site-Seeing
Hamburg is not rich in great architectural sites because of its historic past of being a major harbor. However the city still manages to capture interest of tourist from all over the world. The city has plenty of sites which attract visitors from all over the globe.

Hamburg City Hall:
The impressive Hamburg city hall is situated at one end of Mönckebergstraße. The city hall is also known by the name “Rathaus". The city hall was built in 1897 out of sandstone in neo-Renaissance style. The hall has several magnificent halls used for representative purposes and sittings of government and parliament. The place in front of the city hall is called the Rathausmarkt. The Rathausmarkt hosts many events in summers. The city hall is a major political centre and vigorous heart of our city. The hall houses the two most important political organs of the Hamburg, the Hamburg Parliament, known in other states as the "Landtag", and the Senate, often known as the State Government. The Hamburg City Hall houses the seats of the most important representatives, the President of the Hamburg Parliament and the Lord Mayor.

Chile House:
Chile House was built by Henry Brarens Sloman on the 5,000 sq m building site and resembled a passenger ship. It took over 4.8 million bricks to built Chile House and the building stood for a long time as a symbol of economic revival after the end of the war. Chile House soon rose to the status of one of the major landmarks in the city, second only to the ‘Michel’ Church. Chile House stands out as a monument of great architectural achievement. The bricks of Chile House have a shimmering effect and reflect the change of light in the surrounding with a varying luster. Chile House looks especially beautiful at night, when it seems to capture all the light present and throws it back in an amplified form which veins out along its immensity. Chile House has over 2,800 windows which overlook some of the most scenic places in the city. In 1983 Chile House in Hamburg was recognized as an architectural monument and was included in the UNESCO list of World heritage Sites. Chile house attracts a large number of visitors throughout the year and is a loved site for tourists all over the world.
