Transportation & Reach
Hannover, like all major cities of Germany, has an extensive public
transport system with railway lines, autobahns and secondary roads
connecting the city to almost every other major city of the country.
Further its efficient and economical trams, busses and metro lines make it
very easy to reach most destinations within the city and its
surroundings without the trouble of having to find and pay for parking
places.
The suburban railway system of Hannover was finished just before the 2000
World Expo making it one of the most modern in Europe.
Hannover Airports:
- Langenhagen International Airport (HAJ) or Hannover Airport. Just
16km (12 miles) away from the city center, the airport directly connects
the city with all major destinations in Europe. Got its name from the
nearby town Langenhagen, it is the eighth largest airport of Germany.
Hannover Railway Transportation:
- InterCityExpress (ICE) Network. It is a high-speed train by Siemens
AG. The train service not only provides transport within Germany but
also connects the city with many other countries of Europe like Zurich,
Switzerland or Vienna and Austria. ICE also ply to Liege, Brussels,
Belgium and at lower speeds to Amsterdam and Netherlands.
- The Hanover S-Bahn. The Deutsche Bahn AG operates the S-Bahn
network
of Hannover. It connects the city to neighboring cities like Nienburg,
Lehrte or Langenhagen. The Hannover Hauptbahnhof is the central station
of the city and is a hub of vital importance in the German high-speed
ICE network. It is the starting point of Hannover-Wurzburg high-speed
rail line and the central hub for Hanover S-Bahn too offering
international and national connections to virtually everywhere in
Germany.
Local Transportation of Hannover:
- Hannover Stadtbahn. An extensive light rail system
traditionally operated by Ustra later handed over to Intalliance in 2003
but still know by the former name by Hannover locals.
- Tramways. Mostly covers the outer city.
- Subway. Besides being very modern and comfortable, it is also
is the fastest way to get around in the city. It covers mostly the inner
city.
- Buses. An extensive and economical network. Known for being
designer.
