History & Evolution
Hong Kong was a part of China during the Qin , the Tang and the Song
dynasties. The city served a major naval base for China. The most famous
event in the history of Hong Kong was the first Opium War in which took
place in the year 1839. This war took place between China and Britain
because the ruling Qing Dynasty authorities refused to import opium.
As a result the island of Hong Kong became a British colony in 1841. In
1860, after China's defeat in the Second Opium War, Kowloon Peninsula south
of Boundary Street and Stonecutter's Island were also ceded to Britain under
the Convention of Peking. Hong Kong in the late nineteenth century was a
major trading post of the British Empire. During World War II Japan invaded
Hong Kong and the city was surrendered to Japan on 25 December. Hoever with
japan's defeat in world war the city again came under the British rule in
1945.
The People's Republic of China came into existence in 1949. Huge
immigration started in Hong Kong from China due to the fear of communist
rule. Several companies shifted their head offices from other parts of China
to Hong Kong. Hong Kong underwent rapid industrialization. The northern Hong
Kong became a SEZ of PRC. Today, Hong Kong is an important financial center
not only in PRC but in whole of Asia.
