The public transportation system of Budapest consists of roads, railways &
waterways, while Budapest Ferihegy International Airport serves an
international gateway for the city.
Along with well-structured highways and streets, buses, trolley buses,
trams, suburban railway lines, metro & boats serves transport of the
city. The three main railway terminals are another means that provide access
to the city.
Budapest Airports:
Ferihegy Budapest International Airport (BUD): Situated 16km (10m) from the
city center, the airport serves both domestic and international flights.
Budapest Railway Transportation:
The Hungarian State Railways (MAV) covers both national and international
routes. MAV directs three large international railway stations in Budapest:
- Keleti Palyaudvar (eastern station), VIII Baross Ter
- Nyugati Palyaudvar (western station), VI Nyugati Ter
- Deli Palyaudvar (southern station), I Krisztina Korut Direct rail
links connect Hungary to dozen of European cities, with over 50
international scheduled trains arriving at Budapest.
- Keleti is the principal terminus for international rail services from
Western Europe.
- Nyugati is the main terminus for trains heading east to Romania &
Slovakia, for destinations such as Bucharest & Bratislava.
- There are also rail links to southern Hungary, Croatia &
Slovenia, to destinations such as Zagreb & Ljubljana. There is also
a luxury rail safaris between London, Budapest & Venice.
Local Transportation of Budapest:
With efficient, effective & cheap public transport facilities, run
by Budapesti Kozlekedesi Vallalat (BKV), getting around the city is no
hassle at all.
- Metro: There are three metro lines namely, M1 yellow, M2 red &
M3 blue that intersect at Deak ter.
- Bus: It is a popular mean of getting to Budapest with three
main stations. All international buses & some domestic ones to/from
Hungary's south & west arrive at & depart from Nepliget bus
station.
- Boat: In the summers a scheduled hydrofoil service operates
up the Danube to Vienna.
- Train: Runs from Huvosvolgy district to Szechenyi Hill.
- Taxis: They are available fairly easily. Beside metros,
suburban rails, buses, trams & boats, there are a couple of less
usual vehicles also in Budapest:
- Trolleybus (trolibusz): on several lines in Pest.
- Funicular (siklo): the Castle Hill Funicular between the
Chain Bridge & Buda Castle.
- Cyclecar (bringohinto) for rent in Margaret Island.
- Chairlift (libego).
- Rack Railway (fogaskereku vasut): the Budapest Cog-wheel Railway.
- Children's Railway (gyermekvasut). The latter three vehicles run
among Buda hills.
