Business Overview
Chennai is a city with diversified economic base. The city is known by the
name of Automobile City of the country, as it is the base for
around 45 per cent of India's auto components industry and 27 per cent of
the vehicle industry. Some of the known global automotive companies such as
Hyundai, Ford, Mitsubishi, TVS, Royal Enfield, TAFE, Dunlop, MRF have
manufacturing plants in and around Chennai.
Auto Ancillary is the other major Industry of Chennai. Recently, software
development and business process outsourcing also have emerged as major
areas in the city's economy. Software giants like Infosys, Wipro, Accenture
and HP have development centers in the city. This fast emerging IT hub has a
well developed Special Economic Zone (SEZ) of its own which is housing many
technology and biotechnology parks.
Chennai is also an important center for banking and finance, with several
large financial companies, insurance companies, Madras Stock Exchange,
national and international banks headquartered here.
Major Business Centers
Chennai Trade Center (CTC):
Set up over an area of 25 acres in Nandambakkam at a prime location in
Chennai, the center is the initiative of ITPO (Indian Trade Promotion
Organization). It is Comprising of two air-conditioned halls encompassing
areas of 5,000 sq. meters. The complex recently has added a modern and fully
air-conditioned Convention Center.
The Convention Center which conducts some of the major conferences,
conventions, cultural shows and trade fairs of the country, has numerous
unique facilities like sliding partition, infra-red digital interpretation
systems, theatrical lighting system, modern audio and video system, meeting
rooms, banquet hall, business center, multiple screen backdrops and much
more.
Major Commercial Hubs
Anna Salai:
Anna Salai is the most important Shopping and commercial venue of Chennai.
It has the major shopping complex and markets like Mount Road and offers a
wide range of products, hotels, restaurants, art galleries, emporiums and a
feast of glittering showrooms.
Mahatama Gandhi Road (M.G. Road):
Located at the heart of Chennai, at Nungambakkam division or taluk, M.G.
Road road is one of the busiest commercial centers of Chennai. It is often
called by the name Nungambakkam High Road (NH Road) too. The road is dotted
with commercial office spaces, institutions, up market shopping complexes
and financial institutions like ICICI Bank and ABN Amro Bank. MG Road also
houses important institutional spaces like the Southern India regional
council of Institute of Chartered accountants of India, Ayakar Bhavan
(Office of Income tax department), Office of Central excise and customs and
some famous hotels like Taj Coromandel and The Park.
Another important landmark located near to the M. G. Road is the US
Consulate and is located near the Junction of M. G. Road and Mount Road. The
intersection Point of MG Road, Anna Salai and Dr Radhakrishnan Salai is
popularly known as the Gemini Circle.
Major Manufacturing Zones
Ambattur-Padi Industrial Estate (AIE):
AIE is the biggest small-scale industrial estate and Textile Industry hub
of South Asia. There are large number of apparel industries and textile
industries like ACL (Ambattur Clothing Limited) and Bombay Fashions. Spread
over an area of 4.9 km², AIE also has development centers of some known
software companies like HCL and Tata Consultancy Services. There are also
few BPO centers in the area.

Guindy Industrial Estate:
Also called by the name Thiru-Vi-Ka Industrial Estate, Guindy Industrial
Estate works under the administration of Tamil Nadu Small Industries
Development Corporation (SIDCO). The industrial area is spread over 405
acres. Centrally located in the prime locality of the city of Chennai, the
estate houses small, tiny units besides development Institutions, Banks,
training centers and industrial complexes for garments & electronics.
