Transportation & Reach
Chennai is one of the four major Metro cities of India and has a well developed transport infrastructure. Popularly known as "Gateway to South India", the city is also well connected to other parts of India and the world. The International Airport of Chennai is the third busiest in India and is the premier international gateway in South India.

Chennai Airports:
The Anna International Airport and the Kamaraj Domestic Airport located at Tirusulam, at a distance of 20 km from the city. The international terminal has several important international airlines with regular flights to several cities around the world. Domestic terminal also has daily flights to all-important centers in India.

Chennai Railway Transportation:
The city is well connected to the entire major cities and towns in India through its wide railway network. The two major railheads of Chennai are
  • Chennai Central or Madras Central station connects the city by broad gauge and to all major north and west cities of India.
  • The Egmore station is the starting point for both meter gauge and broad gauge trains proceeding to destinations within the state as well as to the southern states of India. The suburban system can be broken down into four sections:
  • Central - Avadi - Arakkonam
  • Central - Ennore - Gummidipoondi
  • Beach - Tambaram
  • MRTS (Mass Rapid Transport System)
Chennai Sea Transportation:
The city has two major ports namely Chennai Port (India's second busiest container hub handling general industrial cargo, automobiles etc) and Ennore Port. Apart from these, a passenger liner to Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands connects Chennai to these islands.

Local Transportation of Chennai:
Chennai's Intra-city transport requirements are met by an extensive public transport system. The government-owned Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus service covers most of the city and its suburbs. In addition to this, private metered taxis and autos are also extensively used. Vans (popularly called "Maxi Cabs"), ‘Call Taxi’ and private mini bus also forms one of the very common and convenient way of transport
