Transportation & Reach
Many international carriers fly from Delhi to other cities in the world.
This makes the city a vital link between India and rest of the globe. Being
the capital state of India and the hub of the Indian Railways network, Delhi
is well connected by road and railways to every part of the country. As
Delhi's population is growing exponentially, the city's transportation
authority was having problems in reducing the traffic congestion. But with
state government initiative, today, there are more flyovers and highways in
Delhi than in all other Indian metropolitan cities making its transportation
system the best in India.
Delhi Airports:
Indira Gandhi International Airport is the only and most important
international airport in Delhi. It is divided into two wings, International
Terminal (20 km from downtown Cannaught Place) and Domestic Terminal (Known
as Palam Airport, which is at a distance of 15 km from City Center). Private
and Public taxis are easily available outside the airport to facilitate
quick and easy journey to the city area.
Delhi Railway Transportation:
Delhi is the main center of the Indian Railways network with Express trains
to all parts of the country. Delhi has three major railway stations:
- Delhi Main Station (also called Old Delhi Railway Station), about 6
km from Downtown.
- New Delhi Railway Station, about 1 km from Downtown.
- Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station is just 5 km from downtown.
Local Transposition of Delhi:
Delhi has one of India's largest environment friendly bus transport systems
with most of the buses plying under the State-owned Delhi Transport
Corporation (DTC) and other private operators such as the BlueLine Transport
Corporation. The Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT), Kashmiri Gate forms the
focus of all inter-city bus services, whereas, Sarai Kale Khan and Anand
Vihar are the additional Terminuses providing convenient access to other
neighboring cities. Taxis, Autos, Cycle Rickshaws, City Bus Service and
Night Bus Services are available at these terminuses.
The Metro (mass rapid-transit system) is the latest and fastest means of
local transport running across Delhi these days, on the long elevated tracks
and underground tunnels. Though half of it is still under construction.
Apart from these, the auto rickshaws (sometimes called Auto) and cycle
rickshaws forms an another important and popular means of public
transportation in Delhi.
