History & Evolution
Yogyakarta cetainly has a very colourful and vibrant history. The city is known as a destination rich in cultural heritage and traditional architectures. The city came into picture in the 18th century when the Muslim Mataram Kingdom was under the regime of Pakubuwono II. The kingdom was however divided in two regions like Surakarta Hadiningrat kingdom and Nyayogyakarta Hadiningrat kingdom. The second kingdom was only called Yogyakarta. The Yogyakarta Sultanate was established in 1755. The Sultan Hamengkubuwono I spent a good many years to build the capital Surakarta and Kraton was declared as the centerpiece.

Yogyakarta Special region became a province in 1950 because of its contribution in the independence struggle. The city of Yogyakarta became the capital of this province. In 1945 Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX of Yogyakarta and Sri Paku Alam V111 in Yogya declared their independent sultanates to be a part of the Republic of Indonesia. In 1998 however the new Sultan Hamengkubuwono X was selected as the new governor of the provincial House of Representatives. The city was shattered by th 2006 earthquake which led to the loss of life and property. However the city of Yogyakarta still stands out as a major city of Indonesia and an attractive tourist destination.

The city of Yogyakarta attracts millions of tourists each year from Indonesia and other parts of the world. The city is renowned for its cultural heritage. One can enjoy the visits to ancient temples, museums and markets which add the charm

Baron Beach:
The Baron Beach is a beautiful beach which lies in the Kemandang Village in the city of Yogyakarta. The beach also has a limestone mountain which is a famous site for adventure. One can admire the beauty of the beach by the mazing view that is generated from the top of the hill. The beach is also popular as a fishing destination. There is an underground river near the beach. Visitors love to take a bath in this river. The beach hosts a famous local fesival celebrated in the first month of local calander, the festival is called Labuhan.

Kraton Complex:
The huge Kraton Complex in Yogyakarta reflects the lifestyles of the royal Sultans of the city. The Kraton Complex is a huge residential complex that had served as the residence of the Sultans of Yogyakarta for almost 250 years. The complex has royal palaces, houses of king's attendants and servants. Due to its mammoth size the complex is sometimes called 'The city within a city'. The main palace is called Kraton Yogyakarta and it remains open from 9am to 3pm.

The complex also has the famous Alun Alun grounds named after the two Sultans. The grounds hosts a parade on Prophet Mohammad's Birthday. The complex also has Taman Sari which is a water Castle that was built by the first sultan of Yogyakarta. The beautiful bathing pools can still be detected in the ruined structure. Siti Hinggil Selatan is a palace in the complex that hosts shadow puppet shows every weekend. The complex also houses a Mosque and a Museam.

Benteng Vredeburg:
Benteng Vredeburg also known as the Vredeburg Fort is a famous attraction in the city of Yogyakarta. This particular fort is located opposite the Gedung Agung. This ancient structure was created in 1765 by the Dutch.

The fort was built to protect the Dutch residents from the attacks of Sultans. The fort is surrounded by moats. These have been well maintained and these can be seen even today. The entire fort has a rectangular shape. One can also witness the the Sultan's Palace from the fort. Besides this there are also a number of other historical monuments around the Palace that can be seen from this point.
