Transportation & Reach
The Capital of Ireland, Dublin is the main gateway to the country i.e. if
you have to get to the country, then youll probably end up entering
through the city.
Further, being the center of Ireland's transport system, Dublin has a
well-planned transport facility with rail, road, air & water being the
main modes of transport in the city.
Dublin Airports:
- Dublin Airports (DUB): Location 11km (7m) north of Dublin, near the
M50 & M1 motorways, the airport is one of the world's fastest
growing airports.
Dublin Railway Transportion:
- Iarnrod Eireann (Irish Rail) provides the national service. Services
do not cover all parts of the country but are quite reliable.
- Dublin has two main stations namely, Connolly Station on Amiens
Street & Heuston Station, by the Quays.
Dublin Water Transportation:
The city water transportation is run through two main ports, with a series
of harbours.
- Dublin Ferry Port on Alexandra Road in the east.
- Dun Laoghaire Harbour on Westmoreland Street, 14km (9 m) south of the
city. The Dublin Port Authority oversees these ports. Various major
ferry services include Irish Ferries, Stena Line & the Isle of Man
Steam Packet Company.
Local Transportation of Dublin:
The Dublin Transportation Office governs the public transport network.
- Suburban Rail/DART: Dublin Suburban Rail network consists of
five lines serving mainly the Greater Dublin Area. One of these lines
runs along Dublin Bay and is known as the Dublin Area Rapid Transit
(DART) line, the only electrified railway in the country.
- Bus: Atha Cliath (Dublin Bus) runs the city bus services. The
whole network consists of nearly 200 daytime Dublin Bus routes & 24 Nitelink
late night services, which run on Thursday to Saturday nights. Apart
from some tourist buses, all Dublin Bus services are one-person
operated.
- Light Rail/Tram: A two-line light rail
network called the Luas opened in 2004 and has proved popular in the
areas it serves, although the lack of a link between the two lines is
widely criticized. At present only two routes to the suburbs (arranged
into three zones) is primarily used by commuters.
Hotel & Accommodations
Accommodation in Dublin is fairly expensive with wide array of elegant &
luxurious hotels and some very old & grand hotels. In addition, lots of
three-star & smaller hotels are also there but most tend to be quite
pricey.
However, if youre on a tight budget, then you can always opt for one
of the numerous B&Bs, guesthouses or hostels which dot the city and are
usually quite comfortable. Another option is to get accommodation outside
the city that will work out more economical, especially if youre
staying long.
