Overview
Beirut is the capital, largest city and chief seaport of Lebanon. The city
was long ago discovered as a port on east west cross roads for trading and
business purposes. Today also an important banking center with free currency
ex-change, Beirut provide employment in trade, banking, construction,
import-export and service industries.
A sense of life, energy and dynamism is echoed by the capitals
geographical position which makes the city a great promontory jutting into
the blue sea with dramatic mountains rising behind it.
Beirut is a city of contrasts where the glitterati rub shoulders with the
ghetto. Where liberally sprinkled cyber cafes, jazz clubs and opulent
shopping district struggles to fit in with the endless stream of refugees
disoriented by 17 years of civil war.
However, the city had undergone major reconstruction in recent years and
despite the Israel-Lebanon conflict in 2006, the city regained its status as
a tourist, cultural, intellectual and commercial center of Middle East.
Therefore, the Ministry of Tourism aptly describes Beirut as The City
That Would Not Die.
The Capital houses numerous international organizations including the
United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the
International Labour Organization (ILO) and United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Besides its many advantages
also make Beirut a natural venue for international, regional or local
conferences and conventions along with some trade events.
