History & Evolution
The area of Christchurch was occupied by moa-hunting, Ngati Mamoe and Ngai Tahu Tribes. Between 1830 to 1850 the city of Christchurch was inhibited by Europeans. During 1850-1851 the first organized groups of English settlers entered into Christchurch. Christchurch officially got the status of the city by Royal Charter on July 31, 1856, making it officially the oldest established city in New Zealand. The city of Christchurch has been largely influenced by Britishers in the past. This is evident from the older buildings, especially the Anglican Cathedral in the Square in the very center of the city.

New Brighton Beach:

The prominent feature of the beach is the great pier built by the people of Christchurch and New Brighton. The beach is the popular destination for the people who love surfing and swimming. The beach also has a kids paddling pool where children make the most of it. Fishing can also be done from the pier. For those who want to read, the New Brighton Library is also located on the beach front. The library offers great views from the large windows. The pier on the beach also hosts an annual event called the fireworks extravaganza. There are a number of food joints on the beach as well. The New Brighton Beach is among the most visited destination in Christchurch.

Canterbury Museum:
The Canterbury Museum is a very important cultural and heritage site of New Zealand. The Museum was established in 1867. The Museum houses more than one million priceless items which are a symbol of the rich history of New Zealand. Apart from this the Maori exhibits, exhibits showing a typical Christchurch Street in the Victorian era and tales from Antarctica’s heroic era, also adds to its charm. The Canterbury Museum also has a natural history center made especially for the children. The center is named 'Discovery' and is a site for recreation as well as education. The Museum also hosts several events and educational programs. The venue also hosts the Pacific Arts Festival which celebrates Canterbury’s relations with the Pacific. The Museum also has a Cafe on the rooftop.

Christchurch Botanic Gardens:
The Christchurch Botanic Gardens was officially inaugurated on July 9th, 1863. The Gardens were basically the work of the Britishers who were ruling the city at that time. The Gardens cover an approximate area of around 30 hectares. The Botanic gardens are home to some of the most rare species of Flowers. There are a variety of gardens in the Botanic Gardens. Each having its own quality and aura, the gardens are a treat for the eyes. The Rock garden and the heather gardens are among the most visited gardens. The Water Garden at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens is famous for the shrubs. But what catches the eye is the Rose Garden with its awesome collection of 250 varieties of rose. The gardens offer recreation to travelers from across the boarders and to the residents of Christchurch.

Christchurch Cathedral:
Christchurch Cathedral in New Zealand is the most popular church of the country. The city of Christchurch got its name because of this church only. The city was built around the church only. The planners of the Canterbury Association along with four vessels arrived in Lyttelton harbour in 1850. The foundation stone of the Cathedral was finally laid on a rainy day in 1864. The construction work was stalled for almost a decade owing to lack of funds.

The beautiful architecture of the church attracts a large number of visitors from all over the world. Various events of school are celebrated in the church. The school events and activities that make a part of the church include Kidsfest, The Cathedral Grammar School Founders' Day Service, St Margaret’s College Founders' Day Service, St Margaret’s College Carol Service, Christ’s College Carol Service, Visits to the Christmas tree and carol singing and Children’s Christmas Service with Animals. The church also celebrates annual events like Floral Festival Service, Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, Lent, The Cathedral Grammar School Founders' Day Service, Commonwealth Service, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Day etc.
