Overview
The seat of the district of Lisbon, the city of Lisbon is the capital
and largest city of Portugal. Due to its economic output, standard of
living and market size, the greater Lisbon sub region is among the major
financial and economic centers of the Iberian Peninsula.
As the seat of government and residence of Head of State, Lisbon is the
political center of the country. Situated at the point where River Tagus
feeds into Atlantic, the city is built on seven hills which provides
plenty of vantage points from where to contemplate the distant horizons
the city.
This commercial and cultural hub of Portugal is currently in the middle
of a building boom, which began after it was chosen the Host City for
Expo 98. Since then Lisbon has become a major center for various kinds
of international exhibitions and fairs. These new construction
experiences have given the city its rightful place as the 'golden city'
of southern Europe. Therefore, after slumbering for decades, the city
has regained it modern, vibrant and cosmopolitan identity much similar
to that which it enjoyed in 15th-16th centuries when it was the center
of trade and starting point for maritime exploration of the globe.
While much is new, there is plenty of the old left as well to charm
visitors giving this metropolis a slightly provincial air. This European
City of Culture certainly lives up to its title with fascinating
old-fashioned and funky art, charming architecture and traditions.
Pretty boulevards, Art Nouveau architecture and Moorish settlements
stand along with the high-rise buildings, theatres, nightclubs and
museums making Lisbon all that you can expect a European capital to be.
