Saint Petersburg is also known as the Northern capital of Russia. The city however is not the capital of Russia and comes next only to Moscow in terms of administrative importance. Saint Petersburg is located on the banks of Neva River in Russia. The city got its name from its founder Tsar Peter I. The city was a capital of Russia from 1732 to 1918.

The historic city of Saint Petersburg is Russia second largest city after Moscow. Saint Petersburg is a major cultural hub in Europe. The city's importance is also enhanced due to the fact that Saint Petersburg is a major sea port on the Baltic Sea. The city has several monuments which are listed in the UNESCO World Heritage list. The city is a major political and cultural center of Russia. Saint Petersburg is also the major business hub of Russia. The city has headquarters of a number of international corporations and banks.

The city is also the most northern city of the world with a population more than one million. The city occupies the delta of the neva river and its numerous islands. The city is therefore sometimes called as a 'City on 101 islands'. St. Petersburg is very rich in architectural and artistic monuments. The city has numerous historic palaces, monuments and canals. The city is also home to some of the world's most famous artists and writers. The city hosts a number of trade fairs, trade shows, exhibitions and conventions throughout the year.
