History & Evolution
Saint Petersburg was founded in the year 1703 by Tsar Peter the Great. The city of Saint Petersburg has a very short but a very eventful history. St. Petersburg's fortress (the Peter and Paul Fortress) was founded on 27th May 1703. The wooden Cabin of Peter the Great was the first residential building in the new city.

The city was hit by the 'St. Petersburg floods' in August 1703. Saint Petersburg remained the capital of Russia till 1725. With the death of Peter in 1725 the city underwent a decline. Saint Petersburg was ruled by Peter's wife between 1725 to 1740. In the year city came under the control pf Peter's daughter Elizabeth. Elizabeth built marvelous architecture and buildings in the city. The city again became the capital of Russia in the year 1732. During world war I the city was named Petrograd. The city's development was stopped during this period of war.

The city went through huge political and economic crisis till the February revolution in 1917. Bolsheviks headed by Vladimir Lenin took control of the city. Moscow was named as the new capital city of Russia during the civil war of 1917-18. The city was renamed as Leningrad in 1924. The city started recovering from the war slowly but steadily.

The buildings, palaces and monuments destroyed during the war were rebuilt. The city underwent a drastic change and the impact of socialism was clearly visible in the city. The city was renames St. Petersburg in 1991. St. Petersburg today stands out as a beautiful holiday destination and tourist from all over the world are mesmerized by the culture and beauty of the city.

State Hermitage Museum:
The State Hermitage Museum is St. Petersburg's most popular visitor attraction. The Museum is one of the world's largest and most prestigious museums. The museum has millions of artifacts and is visited by tourists from all over the world. The Museum complex houses six buildings including the famous Winter palace. The museum also has a world record of having world's largest collection of Paintings. The Museum has over 350 rooms of exhibits and attracts more than 2.5 million visitors per year. The museum preserves the ancient Siberian artifacts and the works of Picasso, Michaelangelo and Leanor do Da Vinci. The complex also has a 'Hermitage Theater' across the Winter Channel. The theater was specially made for Catherine the Great. The performances or the operas were attended by the empress's closest friends and guests. The theater today serves as a lecture and conference hall. It also hosts several classical music and ballet performances. The Hermitage Museum is a loved destination by art lovers from all over the world.

The Peter and Paul Fortress:
Peter the great built a fort in 1703 to protect the area around St. Petersburg to protect it from Sweden. This fortress was established on the Neva delta on May 27, 1703 and is known as the Peter and Paul Fortress. The fortress also served as a high security political jail in the eighteenth century.

The most important structure in the fortress is the magnificent Peter and Paul Cathedral. It serves as the burial place of all the Russian Emperors. It has tombs of Peter the Great and Alexander III. The magnificent golden angel holding a cross is mounted on the top of the church. The cathedral is the highest building in the city and stands 400 feet high. The curch is also the oldest church in the city. The Fortress also houses a museum and a mint.
