History & Evolution
In the 2nd century AD, the first settlement begin to settle around the region which is now known as Singapore. The first occupation of the Island of Singapore was made by Portuguese in the 16th century. In the 17th century the city of Singapore was occupied by Dutch.Thomas Stamford Raffles is recognized as the founder of modern Singapore.

He landed on the island on 29 January 1819 and set up a trading post of the British East India Company with the permission of then ruler of the Singapore. Singapore became a British colony in August 1824. The area around the Singapore River was largely a commercial area that was dominated by traders. Europeans and the early Indian migrants also settled near the Singapore River. This led to the formation of little India. During World War II the Japanese invaded Singapore leading to what is known as the war of Singapore. The Britishers were defeated in the war and Japan occupied Singapore in the year 1942. However the Britishers regained their control over Singapore in the year 1945.

Singapore gained independence from Britain in August 1963. The country succeeded in recovering from the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, the 2003 SARS outbreak, and terrorist threats posed by Jemaah Islamiyah after the September 11 attacks. Today the city is one of the most visited tourist destination of the world. The city has some of the world's most magnificent architecture.

Site-Seeing
Singapore is one of the most modernized cities of the world. Despite rapid industrialization and fast economic growth, the city of Singapore has still managed to preserve its historic sites and cultural heritage. The city has several sites of attractions which are visited by a large number of tourists each year.

Singapore still has several government buildings, cathedrals and churches. Various museums like Singapore Art Museum , Asian Civilisations Museum , Singapore Philatelic Museum and Singapore History Museum add to the charm of the city.

Little India:
Little India is home of a large Indian community in Singapore. It is one of the most colorful and distinct places to visit in Singapore. Little India main attractions are the gaily painted shophouses. The town has several shops which sell spices, saris and gold bangles. The other major attraction of Little India is Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple which is Little India's busiest and oldest temple.

One can taste the hot and spicy Indian food and that too at very reasonable prices in Little India. The place also hosts several festivals round the year and one of the major festivals is,Thaipusam, held yearly during the full moon in the lunar month of Thai (usually Jan/Feb). The Hindu festival of light Deepawali and the fire walking festival of Thimithi are also some of the major festivals being held in the city.

Chinatown:
Chinatown is the area resided by the Chinese in Singapore. The region is famous for numerous Chinese shops, Chinese restaurants and Chinese handicrafts. However the major attraction of the Chinatown is the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. This four storied temple houses a 27-foot statue of Maitreya Buddha, 10,000 Buddhas Pagoda and a large Tibetan-style prayer wheel. The temple is very famous not only in Singapore but all over the world.

The Chinatown also has a magnificent museum, Chinatown Heritage which shows the historic past of Chinatown. The most amazing thing is the presence of a Muslim Jamae Mosque. The mosque was built in 1830 by Tamil Muslims. The Chinatown is not only an important tourist site but a site of spiritual importance. The Chinatown also houses Sri Mariamman Temple which is Singapore's oldest and most important Hindu temple. Thian Hock Keng Temple is the oldest Hokkien temple in Singapore. The temple was created in 1821. Apart from this the place also has several shopping centers and it serves as a major shopping destination of Singapore.

Another attraction of Chinatown is the People's Park Complex. The complex has shops selling electronics, clothing, clocks, Chinese medicine and jewelery. Chinatown Point, pearl's center, the majestic and OG People's Park are other places of importance.

Asian Civilizations Museum:
The Asian Civilizations Museum is one of the most visited museums in Singapore. The Museum has 11 galleries showcasing over 1,300 collections related to the civilizations of China, Southeast Asia, South Asia and West Asia.

Sentosa Island:
Sentosa Island was merely a fishing village known as Pulau Blakang Mati. "Sentosa" – means peace & tranquillity and the island today serves as a peaceful tourist destination. The islands are taken care by the Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) which was established in 1972. Just a few minutes from the city, the Sentosa Island is a majestic hangout place.

The place offers facilities like sea sports, golf as well as hotel accommodation and retreats. The Island has a total area of 500-hectares, and is home to lizards, monkeys, peacocks, parrots as well as other native fauna and flora. Sentosa is a famous tourist destination and is visited by local families as well as foreign tourists. Sentoda Island also offers several accommodation on the beachfront. The place is loved by people from all ages.
