Overview
Johannesburg is the provincial capital of South Africas wealthiest
and smallest province, Gauteng. Having one of the largest metropolitan areas
in the world, the city is the only global city of Africa. Besides being the
Constitutional Court of the nation, it is also the economic and financial
hub of South Africa.
This ever-growing business powerhouse of Africa started its development
journey just a century before when a rich gold-bearing rock reef was found
in the city. Since then Johanna is often called as The City of Gold
making it the site of delirious development that has been ongoing ever
since. Its business expos and international events not only further enhance
its trade but its global niche as well.
Johannesburg is often considered as a place to just pass through to get to
someplace else by most of the travellers. No doubt the city is definitely a
very important transport hub, but it is much more than that. It is indeed
one of the most exciting and interesting city of South Africa with about
hundred years of turbulent political & cultural history and pulsating
spirit of hope in post-apartheid times.
However, there is a negative side too to the city, which is incidental to
the chasm between rich and poor. This gap has given rise to a high crime
rate evidenced by fortress-like security protecting the wealthier suburbs
and making home security a big business in South Africa.
