History & Evolution
Kiev is one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe. The city was inhibited
by Eastern Slavic tribes in the 9th century. The city in the tenth century
became the capital of first Ukrainian state which later was known as Kievan
Rus. Kiev was invaded by the Mongols in the thirteenth century. However in
the year 1775 it was completely annexed by the Russian Empire. In January
1918 after the fall of Russian Empire, the independence of Ukraine was
proclaimed and the Ukrainian National Republic was established. The
Bolshevik Party came to power after the October revolution.
It expanded The control over Ukraine and Ukraine finally became a part of
Soviet Union. Most of the cities heritage sites and buildings were destroyed
in the World war-II. However, the city still managed to preserve some of its
cultural and historic wealth. The city of Kiev was largely influenced by the
Russian culture. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Kiev became
the capital of independent Ukraine. This was a major landmark in the history
of Kiev. The city of Kiev underwent rapid development phase after its
independence. The city todays is one of the prominent cities of eastern
Europe. The city boasts of its heritage sites and historic belongings.
Site-Seeing
Kiev is one of the oldest city of eastern Europe. The city is bestowed with
cultural wealth and historic architecture. There are numerous sites to see
in Kiev. Kiev because of magnificent architecture attracts a large number of
tourists each year. Kiev has museums, beautiful parks, ancient churches,
famous buildings and other monuments that make it a popular heritage site.
Sofia Cathedral:
St. Sofia Cathedral was established in the first half of the 11th century.
The cathedral served as a social, political and cultural center of Kievan
Rus. The cathedral is the place where the first Russian library was founded.
At that time it had 5 naves and was surrounded with 2 circled galleries. The
cathedral was destroyed several times and reconstructed many a times. The
St. Sofia Cathedral building, thus, reflects the architecture of the 17th,
18th and 19th centuries.
The St. Sofia Cathedral, today is one of the most visited sites of Ukraine.
The interior of the St. Sofia Cathedral reflects the famous mosaics and
fresco paintings. The cathedral is also the tomb of the great Kyivan
princes. Some of the great princes of Keiv were buried in the cathedral.

Golden Gate:
Golden Gate is a unique fortification architecture monument of Kiev. The
golden gate was constructed in 1017-1024 and served as a main entrance to
Kiev. The Golden Gate is also known as the "sky gate". The Site
now serves as the Golden Gate historical museum. The golden gate is a must
visit in Kiev. Golden gate is perfect example of great architecture of
Ukraine. Golden Gate attracts several visitors from all over the world and
is popular tourist spot in Kiev.

Independence Square:
The Independence Square also known as Maidan Nezalezhnosti is located in
the center of Kiev. The square hosts a number of Parades, concerts,
festivals and other city arrangements. It contains six fountains,
Independence Column and artificial waterfall. The Independence Square also
houses some of Kiev's best architecture. The Trade Union Association Office
is also located in the square. The Independence Square houses some of Kiev's
tallest buidings, whcih offer the scintillating views of Sofia Cathedral,
Andreevskaya Church, City Parliament, the Central Mall, and a lot of
administrative buildings. The square also has various restaurants, hotels,
cafes and food joints. The square is visited by millions each week,
specially on weekends. The square houses offices of several national and
international corporations.
