Overview
The third largest Emirate of United Arab Emirates, Sharjah is a unique city
to have land on both Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Containing the main
administrative and commercial centers together with an impressive array of
cultural and traditional projects, the city of Sharjah won "The
Cultural Capital of the Arab World" Award (UNESCO) for the year 1998.
While several museums and mosques enhances its historical value,
exceptional souks and famous Expo Center on the other hand enhances citys
commercial value. Other distinctive landmarks include number of recreational
areas and public parks together with traditional market places, and
unspoiled beaches.
Thanks to its strategic location at the crossroads between east and west,
Sharjah has been an important seaport for trade & commerce in the gulf
region for centuries. Today also the city has evolved in its strategic role
with its modern airport and seaports becoming one of the largest cargo hubs
in the world. Having both natural assets and a well-developed infrastructure
has further made it the key commercial center in the Middle East.
Known as Dubais poor cousin for long, Sharjah has invested heavily in
tourism and thus has become the entry point for travelers arriving to UAE
from all over the world. This modern and enchanting city is home to many
office buildings, skyscrapers and is also houses to the biggest Art museum
in the Gulf.
