History & Evolution
Miami was founded by the Tequesta Indians more than 10,000 years ago. But
the real discovery was made by the Spanish in the 16th century. The most
important landmark in the history of Miami has been the year 1891, when a
widow named Julia Tuttle moved to Florida and purchased 640 acres of land on
the north bank of the Miami River.
The railroad builder, Henry Flagler extended his railroad into Miami,
building a luxury hotel and laying out a new town. This new city of Miami
was incorporated on July 28, 1896. The city soon grew in population as
people with diverse cultures begin to flock in the city. In 1926 a terrible
hurricane struck Miami. As a result 100 people lost their lives and
thousands of homes were destroyed. In 1930 the city was also able to recover
from the period of depression thanks to the city's aviation industry.
Between 1959 to 1969 more than a half million Cubans fled to Miami.
The 1980s was a period of racial tension. But the things have changed
in the 21st century. Since 2001, the credit ratings have been steadily
increasing and now the city is at an all time high level standing with all
three of its credit-rating firms. The city of Miami is today a glowing,
cosmopolitan, international metropolis.
